That is what self-determination means to us. But the freedom to shape your own life is not equally given to everyone. Some are born into circumstances they cannot choose. Some grow up surrounded by conflict, violence or instability. Some face barriers to independence, mobility and participation that were never theirs to create. And children, especially, cannot simply walk away from the world they were born into. Sometimes, self-determination has to be protected before it can ever be lived.
We believe strength should never end with ourselves. Because becoming stronger raises another question:
WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE STRENGTH WE BUILD?
Strength used only for the self can become ego. Strength used against those with less power becomes domination. Strength used to protect becomes responsibility. That is the kind of strength AYA believes in.
We believe every human being deserves the greatest possible opportunity to shape their own life. Not to have their future decided for them.
A child cannot choose where they are born.
They cannot choose whether their home is affected by war.
They cannot choose the political reality around them, the opportunities available to them or the family circumstances they grow up in.
Before a child can become someone capable of shaping their own future, that possibility sometimes has to be protected for them.
And throughout life, conflict, injury, disability and inaccessible environments can threaten a person’s freedom to move, participate and determine their own path.
As our ability to contribute grows, so should our contribution.
We support work that protects and strengthens:
- safety
- childhood
- independence
- human dignity
- future opportunity
with a particular focus on children, people affected by conflict, and people facing barriers to independence and participation.
AYA supports organizations working to protect human dignity and strengthen people’s ability to determine the course of their own lives.
REAL STRENGTH
- Protect where safety is threatened.
- Restore where independence has been disrupted.
- Create possibilities where circumstances have made the future smaller.
Because growth means more when something beyond ourselves grows with it.
